Living in Columbus

The College of Engineering

The College of Engineering is recognized as one of the top ten engineering colleges in public universities. Its extensive program offers engineering programs in ten departments: Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Industrial Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Welding Engineering, plus programs in the School of Architecture.

Hitchcock HallSpecialized centers and institutes address interdisciplinary problems. Included are the Engineering Experimental Station, National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center (NSF/ERC) for Net Shape Manufacturing, the Center for Automotive Research and Intelligent Transportation (CAR-IT), the Electroscience Laboratory, the Robotics Center, the Center for Materials Research, the Ohio Transportation Research Center, the Ohio Aerospace Institute, and the Ohio Supercomputer Center.

The College annually awards about 1000 BS degrees, 400 MS and 100 Ph.D. degrees. Its programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The College has a chapter of Tau Beta Pi while the Engineering Honor Society and other individual programs maintain their own honor societies.

Through its academic and research programs, its continuing education and workshop activities and industrial interaction programs, the College of Engineering is a major technological and educational resource.

The Ohio State University

University Hall A nationally recognized major learning center, The Ohio State University is one of the nation's most comprehensive public universities. With an eminent faculty, nationally respected academic programs and excellent facilities, located on a central campus of some 3,300 acres in the state's capital, the University offers an ideal environment for learning.

Ohio State offers courses in the fine arts, sciences, and humanities, as well as in all major professional fields through its 19 colleges, seven schools, the agricultural Technical Institute (ATI), the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), and the Graduate School. Students may choose from more than 200 undergraduate majors and more than 8,000 courses.

Our highly respected faculty and research programs make Ohio State a principal international center for graduate and professional education . The University grants nearly 44 percent of all doctoral degrees awarded by Ohio's state-assisted institutions of higher education.

Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the University is a respected member of other distinguished organizations, including the Association of American Universities, composed of the 58 major research institutions in the United States . Ohio State is among the few colleges and universities to have a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's most widely acclaimed honor society. Mortar Board, the senior honor society, also has its headquarters here. In addition, the University's undergraduate honors programs have served as models for other state universities nationwide.

Ohio State has one of the nation's major medical centers; its own airport, Don Scott Field, and a statewide agricultural service through its Cooperative Extension Service.

Through its far-reaching programs in teaching, research, and related public service and through its graduates, Ohio State's vast resources are serving society.

Area Housing.

Graduate students have a range of housing options to choose from at Ohio State and in Columbus. The University maintains two coeducational graduate dormitories as well as apartments for graduate women. These attractively furnished and air-conditioned single and double room units are designed to provide a mature atmosphere for advanced study. The University also has student housing for families in Buckeye Village, an apartment complex on the campus that is close to shopping and other amenities. Each apartment is equipped with major kitchen appliances. Air-conditioning, heat, water, trash collection, storage space, and parking are provided, as is free bus service to other campus locations. Two-bedroom apartments are available to families with children; however, there is a long waiting list, and students are urged to apply as soon as possible. Columbus has a wide range of off-campus housing. Housing costs here are very reasonable compared to other major metropolitan areas. Recreational Facilities.

Ohio State's recreation and sports complexes are among the finest in the world. There are dozens of outdoor tennis and basketball courts, jogging trails, and outdoor exercise courses. Larkins Hall alone has 20 racquetball and handball courts, six squash courts, 12 basketball courts, and multipurpose rooms for karate, judo, archery, and table tennis. It also features an indoor jogging track, two completely equipped conditioning rooms, a Nautilus room, four pools, a diving well, and two saunas, as well as areas for gymnastics, fencing, and wrestling.

The three Jesse Owens recreational centers offer indoor tennis,basketball, and volleyball courts. The University also has two baseball diamonds, two rugby fields, two 18-hole golf courses, more than a dozen football and softball fields, and areas for soccer, volleyball, field hockey, lacrosse and cricket, and crew and sailing. There are many established sports intramural programs.

Home to the Wexner Center for the Visual Arts, OSU has become a focus for innovation in the arts. The University has several ongoing film series, as well as art galleries, exhibit space, and museums. The music, theater, and dance departments offer presentations throughout the year, including a variety of theater productions, student ensemble concerts, and faculty recital series. In addition, Ohio State presents an annual great artist series that features world renowned performers, early music series, year-round theater productions, dance productions, and a variety of special events such as the annual Medieval and Renaissance Festival.

The City of Columbus

The state's capital and largest city, Columbus is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States and currently has a population of just over one million. Moderate housing prices add to the quality of life. Columbus has many information and technology based corporations as well as a large service segment. In addition, several Fortune 500 companies have national or regional headquarters here.

ColumbusColumbus is home of Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and Battelle Memorial Institute, both of which are dedicated to advanced research. CAS is located adjacent to the central campus, and its unsurpassed holdings are available to students and faculty on relatively short notice. Also adjacent to the Columbus campus is Battelle Memorial Institute, one of the nation's major contract research institutions employing research scientists, engineers, and technicians around the world. Battelle is engaged in a broad spectrum of research activities.

The city has a thriving downtown complete with excellent restaurants, a symphony, a ballet company, an opera company, as well as theaters, museums and art galleries. The metropolitan park system, in place for over 100 years, features many bike paths and jogging trails. Two rivers and major reservoirs offer Columbus residents areas for boating, sailing, canoeing, water skiing, and fishing. A fine zoo, dozens of shopping malls, specialty shops, and housing styles ranging from turn-of-the century townhouses to contemporary condominiums and many fine public and private schools have made Columbus an attractive place to work, get an education, start a business, pursue a career or raise a family.
