Idaho National Lab / Ohio State University Academic Center for Excellence in Instrumentation and
Control in Advanced Systems FY 2006 Activity Outline
The primary FY 2006 activity of the INL/OSU Academic Center for Excellence in Instrumentation and Control (I&C) in Advanced Systems is to provide leadership and support for an ICHMI Working Group whose objective is to develop a roadmap that addresses instrumentation, control, and human machine interface (ICHMI) challenges that need to be overcome to further expand nuclear energy in the United States. The ICHMI Working Group is comprised of 10 experts in I&C and human factors representing three national laboratories, two universities, EPRI, NRC and an I&C vender.
A primary objective of this effort is identification of the technical and regulatory gaps that may significantly impact the design, development and licensing of new reactors by inhibiting the design, fabrication, testing and installation of essential ICHMI systems in NP 2010 and GENIV/NGNP plants. A further objective is identification of prospective ICHMI technology development and applications that can enable greater efficiency and cost effectiveness in the design, implementation, testing, licensing, operation and maintenance of advanced plants and nuclear facilities.
The expected product is a Research, Development, and Demonstration (RD&D) Roadmap that will form the basis for a prospective ICHMI crosscut element for the Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) programs and initiatives.
The mission of the ICHMI RD&D Roadmap is to provide the necessary instrumentation, control and human machine interface support needed to achieve success in the NP2010 and NGNP/GEN IV, Programs administered by DOE and in each case, led by a public private partnership.
The scope of the ICHMI R&D Plan covers all instrumentation and control and human machine interface issues that challenge the technical and commercial success in the NP2010, GEN IV, AFCI and NHI Programs.
The DOE is providing financial assistance for a planning meeting, one or two workshops and preparation of the roadmap.
